Hotspots for Retiree Living: Key Growth Areas for 65+ Households
30 September 2024
Between 2018 and 2023, several areas in New Zealand emerged as hotspots for retiree growth. Manawatu, Rotorua, Whangarei, Whakatane, and Gore have seen the highest percentage increases in 65+ households. Leading the pack, Manawatu boasts an impressive 9% annual growth, with Rotorua close behind at 8%. Meanwhile, Whakatane and Gore are steadily climbing, cementing their positions as key areas where retirement housing is expanding. This indicates that these locations are becoming increasingly popular for retirees, likely due to their relative affordability compared to larger urban centres.
When it comes to retirement village units over the same period, Horowhenua District tops the list with 630 additional units per 1,000
retirees. Napier City follows with 520 units, Tauranga City with 430, Waipa District with 420, and Nelson City rounding out the top
five at 370 units. Explore our interactive map to dive into the data and see where the potential lies for new retirement
developments.
